Projections indicate that by 2030 the number of revision THA’s will increase 137% and the number of revision TKA’s 601%. Compared to primary surgery, revisions are technically more demanding with longer operative times and increased blood loss making these procedures potentially more risky for elderly patients. We sought to answer the following questions: Is there an absolute age beyond which perioperative risk outweighs the benefits of revision? Does postoperative survival justify the additional resources utilized in revision surgery?
