Ankle replacement surgery
The most common reason for joint replacement surgery of the ankle is rheumatism or osteoarthritis, but sometimes the surgery is needed to treat a fracture. Joint replacement surgery will be necessary if pain, swelling, restrictions in mobility or malposition interfere with regular life and sleep. The purpose of the surgery is to improve mobility and relieve pain. Leisure activities and exercise opportunities will open up as the pain in the ankle is relieved.
The surgery takes two hours and is usually carried out under epidural anaesthesia. The damaged joint will be replaced with an artificial one. Artificial ankle joints are made of metal and plastic.
The orthopaedist will select the model of the joint based on the patient’s individual factors, such as their general condition, bone quality, anatomical factors and the strain expected on the joint. Coxa Hospital for Joint Replacement uses joints that have been scientifically proven to be of high quality.
